HOUSING
Crested
Geckos are one of the easiest geckos to keep in captivity, however
proper housing of the gecko is very important. The enclosure
should simulate as closely as possible the natural environment of
the lowland rainforest of New Caledonia. The temperature, humidity,
lighting, and vegetation are all factors in keeping a happy and
healthy crested gecko.
For hatchlings to 4 months old, multiple
geckos can easily be housed in small containers such as a plastic
Pet Keeper or small glass aquarium with screen top. Paper towels
are the best substrate for this age as they allow for easy cleaning
and maintenance of the enclosure. You need to place small branches
and twigs in various heights and directions for the geckos so
they have different climbing levels. Live plants such as Pothos
or Ficus can be placed in the enclosure to provide adequate hiding
areas as well as help maintain the humidity for the geckos.
A small lid such as a bottle top or a baby food jar top with water
should be added to the enclosure as well. This water should
be changed daily so the water doesn't get stagnant. Stagnant
water can be a breeding area for bacteria which can contribute to
unhealthy geckos.
For Adult crested geckos, an enclosure measuring
12" x 12" x 18" is sufficient. The same types of twigs, branches,
and plants may be added to the adult enclosure as are in the hatchlings
to 4 months. The Adults may have a small water dish which also
should be changed daily. I keep all my adults, juvies, and hatchling
on paper towels. I find it easiest to clean and maintain the
enclosure.
